Pollen
What is it?
Have you ever seen the pollen baskets on a honeybee's back leg? If so,
that's pollen. Plant pollen contains the male reproductive material of
higher plants. Each of the rounded granules you see in the jar is a load
of pollen brushed from bee's leg. In the hive, pollen is fed to developing
larvae as a source of protein.
What's in it?
Bee pollen is a nutritional powerhouse! It contains nearly all the nutrients
required by the human body; including enzymes and all the necessary amino
acids. It is especially rich in vitamin B5, B3 and B2. It also contains
B-complex, vitamin C, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium and
manganese and most importantly, photochemicals.
Why should I use it?
It is an incredible detoxifier and it alleviates hay fever allergies,
fatigue, high cholesterol, infertility, impotence, and varicose veins.
Its healing properties promote recovery from sickness / surgery. The enzymes
in pollen are needed for every biological process in the body. Consuming
enzyme-rich foods assist the body in preventing disease such as cancer
and auto-immune disorders such as arthritis. Pollen is great for pets
too!
What form is it available in?
Pollen is usually available in a granular form. Honeyland also prepares
pollen in honey or fruit jam.
How should I store it?
Fresh pollen needs to be treated as a perishable. Storing in the fridge
is best. Air dried pollen can be stored at room temperature.
How much should I eat?
Few people are allergic to pollen. Those people who are should avoid consuming
it. If you are unsure if you are allergic, begin with a very small amount
and up your intake slowly to 2 teaspoons a day. You can eat it right off
the teaspoon, sprinkle on top of your cereal or yogurt or blend in your
fruit smoothie.
